e87bbe3700 servo: Merge #13602 - layout: Rewrite Servo's vertical-align support to match CSS 2.1 § 10.8, and implement vertical-align: middle per CSS 2.1 § 10.8.1 (from pcwalton:vertical-align-middle); r=mbrubeck
`InlineMetrics` has been split into `InlineMetrics` for fragments and
`LineMetrics` for lines. Both structures' fields have been renamed in
order to more clearly delineate the difference between *space* and
*content*. Vertical positioning of fragments has been reworked to take
margins and borders into account only for replaced content.

This patch fixes the `vertical_align_super_a.html` reftest. Servo now
matches the rendering that Gecko and WebKit produce.

Additionally, this includes a test for the popular inline-block
centering technique described here:
https://s.codepen.io/shshaw/fullpage/gEiDt?#Inline-Block

79a77ced40 servo: Merge #13655 - Move children_to_process to layout (from bholley:children_to_process); r=<try>
We don't need this for Gecko, and it's hard to implement in that case because
there's nowhere obvious to put it (we don't plan to create TSDs for non-dirty
nodes, and non-dirty nodes can have dirty children which require the
children_to_process atomic). There are various solutions here, but punting is
the easiest.

We'll need to rethink this if/when we need to do a bottom-up traversal for
Gecko.

<!-- Please describe your changes on the following line: -->
This PR fixes two different issues:
1) In non-incremental layout mode if the inline node hasn't changes - the style pass was skipped, that leads to the corresponding ConstructionResult was not produced. When the parent was rebuilt, the child without the ConstructionResult was omited.
2) When the opacity was changed (or other style change, causing only repaint) for image (and others, producing only ConstructionItem) the damage is calculated only from children's flows, not from individual fragments. So for now, let's pretend we've newly constructed the ConstructionItem and thus need to rebuild the parent's flow.

Simon Sapin
c710b104be servo: Merge #12515 - Make the style crate more concrete (from servo:concrete-style); r=bholley
Background:

The changes to Servo code to support Stylo began in the `selectors` crate with making pseudo-elements generic, defined be the user, so that different users (such as Servo and Gecko/Stylo) could have a different set of pseudo-elements supported and parsed. Adding a trait makes sense there since `selectors` is in its own repository and has others users (or at least [one](https://github.com/SimonSapin/kuchiki)).

Then we kind of kept going with the same pattern and added a bunch of traits in the `style` crate to make everything generic, allowing Servo and Gecko/Stylo to do things differently. But we’ve also added a `gecko` Cargo feature to do conditional compilation, at first to enable or disable some CSS properties and values in the Mako templates. Since we’re doing conditional compilation anyway, it’s often easier and simpler to do it more (with `#[cfg(feature = "gecko")]` and `#[cfg(feature = "servo")]`) that to keep adding traits and making everything generic. When a type is generic, any method that we want to call on it needs to be part of some trait.

----

The first several commits move some code around, mostly from `geckolib` to `style` (with `#[cfg(feature = "gecko")]`) but otherwise don’t change much.

The following commits remove some traits and many type parameters through the `style` crate, replacing them with pairs of conditionally-compiled API-compatible items (types, methods, …).

Simplifying code is nice to make it more maintainable, but this is motivated by another change described in https://github.com/servo/servo/pull/12391#issuecomment-232183942. (Porting Servo for that change proved difficult because some code in the `style` crate was becoming generic over `String` vs `Atom`, and this PR will help make that concrete. That change, in turn, is motivated by removing geckolib’s `[replace]` override for string-cache, in order to enable using a single Cargo "workspace" in this repository.)

 * Takes rid of `StylistWrapper`, and uses `Arc::get_mut` instead.
 * Uses the first bullet to precompute the `-servo-details-content` pseudo's style.

Bobby Holley
97c48a8863 servo: Merge #9976 - Remove lifetimes from Style/Layout traits (from bholley:remove_trait_lifetimes); r=SimonSapin
Right now, there's a huge amount of complexity in T{Node,Element,Document} and friends because of the lifetime parameter.

Before I started generalizing this code for use by Gecko, these wrappers were plain structs. They had (and still have) a phantom lifetime associated with them to prevent references to DOM nodes from leaking past the end of restyle, when they might be invalidated by a GC.

When I generalized them, I decided to put the lifetime on the trait as well, since there are some situations where the lifetime is, in fact, necessary. Specifically, they are necessary for the compiler to understand that all the things borrowed from all the nodes and elements and so on have the same lifetime (the lifetime of the restyle), rather than the lifetime of whichever particular element or node pointer the value was borrowed from. This come up in situations where we do |let el = node.as_element()| or |let n = el.as_node()| and then borrow something from the result. The compiler thinks the borrow lifetime is that of |el| or |n|, when it's actually longer.

In practice though, I think the style and layout algorithms we use don't run into this issue much, and we can hack around it where it comes up. So I think we should remove the lifetimes from the traits, which will let us aggregate the embedding-provided traits together onto a single meta-trait and significantly simplify the code.

0f5d421cf7 servo: Merge #7423 - layout: Make the compositor rather than layout determine the position of each iframe (from pcwalton:iframe-stacking-context-position); r=glennw
The old code that attempted to do this during layout wasn't able to work
for multiple reasons: it couldn't know where the iframe was going to be
on the page (because of nested iframes), and at the time it was building
the display list for a fragment it couldn't know where that fragment was
going to be in page coordinates.

This patch rewrites that code so that only the size of an iframe is
determined during layout, and the position is determined by the
compositor. Layout layerizes iframes and marks the iframe layers with
the appropriate subpage ID so that the compositor can place them
correctly.

0238af05da servo: Merge #7207 - layout: Fix several bugs relating to inline borders, padding, and margins (from pcwalton:surround-whitespace-stripping); r=mbrubeck
* The code that attempted to strip out borders that span multiple
  fragments in the same element could go wrong if fragments were
  stripped out due to text clumping or whitespace stripping. This patch
  rewrites that code to maintain flags in the inline fragment context
  specifying whether the node is the beginning or end of the element.
  Not only is this easier to maintain, it's closer in spirit to what roc
  originally suggested two years ago: it's isomorphic to "begin element,
  end element" markers for inline layout.

* Padding and margins for spans containing inline-blocks are now
  properly handled via a division of labor between the `InlineBlock`
  fragment and the `BlockFlow` that represents the inline-block.

* Unscanned text fragments may not be joined together into a text run if
  borders, padding, or margins separate them.

Because Servo now matches the rendering of Gecko and WebKit on the
`input_button_margins_a` reftest, I had to modify it to add some
vertical alignment.

Several issues are addressed in this commit:

* Inline flows now bubble up their absolute descendants instead of
  making the inline flow the containing block for them. (In the future,
  we will need to make the inline flow *sometimes* be the containing
  block for them, but for now it improves sites to unconditionally
  bubble up.)

* Fragments now look at their inline fragment context to determine
  whether they are positioned.

* Inline flows now push the stacking-relative position of the absolute
  containing block down to their inline-block fragments.

* Inline absolute hypothetical fragments can be containing blocks.

* Fixes the logic in
  `containing_block_range_for_flow_surrounding_fragment_at_index`. The
  condition to determine whether fragments are positioned was inverted!

* `Descendants`/`AbsDescendants` has been refactored in order to become
  more friendly to inline absolute containing blocks in the future.

Improves the inline position of the green drop-down arrow in the Google
SERPs. (The block position is still wrong.)

Many CSS tests pass now. There are some new failures, however.

The following reference tests now fail due to a pre-existing bug whereby
whitespace is used to calculate the position of inline hypothetical boxes for
elements with `display: inline; position: absolute`:

* `absolute-replaced-height-036.htm`
* `vertical-align-sub-001.htm`
* `vertical-align-super-001.htm`

The following reference tests fail due to a pre-existing bug whereby we don't
handle `font-size: 0` properly in inline reflow:

* `font-size-zero-1.htm`
* `font-size-zero-2.htm`

The following reference test fails due to the fact that it relied on our
incorrect insertion of whitespace to make room for the black background:

* `inline-formatting-context-007.htm`

85f65924cf servo: Merge #6938 - construct: When repairing styles for incremental reflow, only repair styles of nodes that represent the dirty node (from pcwalton:inline-repair-jumpiness); r=mbrubeck
Fixes jumpiness on many pages; e.g. the WPT results pages.

For some reason, this would not reproduce with an automated test.

c4655740ea servo: Merge #6798 - Implement getComputedStyle (from dzbarsky:gCS); r=pcwalton
It's not quite done but can probably be reviewed anyway.
I still need to finish up a few of the ToCss impls, I just got lazy and wanted to make sure things worked.

The computation of the used values is definitely not right, I'm going to investigate that.

I wrote this patch that makes the test from #6542 render as expected but I am not confident it is actually the right fix. Should the padding be included in the 'ascent' metric for images, or am I just introducing a bug that happens to offset the one I'm trying to fix?

2b915bbedc servo: Merge #6289 - Make LOCAL_CONTEXT_KEY safe and non-leaky (from nnethercote:unleak-LOCAL_CONTEXT_KEY); r=pcwalton
`LOCAL_CONTEXT_KEY` is currently a `Cell<*mut LocalLayoutContext>`. The use
of the raw pointer means that the `LocalLayoutContext` is not dropped when
the thread dies; this leaks FreeType instances and probably other
things. There are also some unsafe getter functions in `LayoutContext`
(`font_context`, `applicable_declarations_cache` and
`style_sharing_candidate_cache`) that @eddyb says involve undefined
behaviour.

This changeset changes `LOCAL_CONTEXT_KEY` to
`RefCell<Option<Rc<LocalLayoutContext>>>`. This fixes the leak and also
results in safe getters.

(Fixes #6282.)

NodeTypeId is supposed to reflect the WebIDL inheritance hierarchy.
All of Text/ProcessingInstruction/Comment inherit from CharacterData,
which inherits from Node. There should be a CharacterDataTypeId value
that differentiates between those, instead.

835b3be20c servo: Merge #5767 - Refactored image cache task - details below (from glennw:image-cache); r=larsbergstrom,jdm
* Simpler image cache API for clients to use.
 * Significantly fewer threads.
   * One thread for image cache task (multiplexes commands, decoder threads and async resource requests).
   * 4 threads for decoder worker tasks.
 * Removed ReflowEvent hacks in script and layout tasks.
   * Image elements pass a Trusted<T> to image cache, which is used to dirty nodes via script task. Previous use of Untrusted addresses was unsafe.
   * Image requests such as background-image on layout / paint threads trigger repaint only rather than full reflow.
 * Add reflow batching for when multiple images load quickly.
   * Reduces the number of paints loading wikipedia from ~95 to ~35.
 * Reasonably simple to add proper prefetch support in a follow up PR.
 * Async loaded images always construct Image fragments now, instead of generic.
   * Image fragments support the image not being present.
 * Simpler implementation of synchronous image loading for reftests.
 * Removed image holder.
 * image.onload support.
 * image NaturalWidth and NaturalHeight support.
 * Updated WPT expectations.
